About
I was awarded the Ph.D. title by the Department of History and Civilization of the European University Institute (Florence, Italy). My thesis is entitled O clero catedralício português e os equilíbrios sociais do poder (1564-1670) [The Portuguese cathedral clergy and the balance of powers (1564-1670)]. In my doctoral dissertation I analyze the role of the cathedral’s clergy in the balance of political and social powers during the referred period.
In what concerns my post-doctoral research, I propose to study the role of the secular clergy on the building process of the Portuguese colonial empire, in the context of the “Catholic Reformation” (1564-1750). It is my aim to examine both the role of the cathedral clergy on the consolidation of Portuguese presence and on the implementation of Catholicism in different areas of the globe.
Keywords: Clergy, Power, Counter-Reformation, Church History, Political and Social History, early modern state-building process.
